Contraindications
Shark Cartilage Concentrate: No specific contraindications have been associated with chondroitin. Pets with liver or kidney diseases should use shark cartilage supplements with caution. Shark Cartilage may increase blood sugar levels and calcium levels in the blood and lower blood pressure. Mild GI upset is rarely observed but Shark Cartilage may induce mild abdominal cramps and/or bloating. Dog/cats with abnormal heart disease, abnormal heart rhythms, a tendency to form kidney stones, and those with cancers that raise calcium levels should use caution when using Shark Cartilage. Small dosages recommended for cats.
Cat’s Claw Extract: Do not take if your pet is pregnant or nursing. Consult with your Vet prior to use if your pet is scheduled for surgery, using blood thinners or has an autoimmune disease. Cat's Claw has been clinically documented with immunostimulant effects and is contraindicated before or following any organ or bone marrow transplant or skin graft. Cat's Claw is contraindicated in pets whose owners are seeking to have them bred. There is a concern that Cat’s Claw Extract might make blood pressure control difficult during surgery due to its mildly blood thinning effects. Discontinue administering Cat’s Claw Extract at least 2 weeks before a scheduled surgery.
Drug Interactions
Shark Cartilage Concentrate: Use of Thiazide diuretics, such as hydrochlorothiazide, can raise calcium levels in the blood and when combined with shark cartilage can lead to dangerously high levels of calcium. Shark cartilage may lower blood sugar levels and caution is advised in pets with diabetes or hypoglycemia. Serum glucose levels may need to be monitored by a Vet, and medication adjustments may be necessary.
Cat’s Claw Extract: Cat's Claw may potentiate blood-thinning drugs and may affect how quickly the liver breaks down some medications and may increase the effects/side effects of some medications. Before giving cat's claw to your dog/cat, talk to your Vet. Some medications changed by the liver include lovastatin (Mevacor), ketoconazole (Nizoral), itraconazole (Sporanox), fexofenadine (Allegra), triazolam (Halcion), and many others, including medications for high blood pressure (antihypertensive drugs). Cat's Claw Extract may decrease blood pressure and taking cat's claw along with medications for high blood pressure may cause blood pressure to go too low. Cat’s Claw supports the immune system and may interact with immunosuppressant drugs.
Cautions
Shark Cartilage Concentrate: If your pet is pregnant or nursing, is in a post-operative state, suffers from renal lithiasis or has suffered a recent heart attack, use caution when using Shark Cartilage. Shark cartilage is safe for most animals when taken appropriately by mouth for up to 40 months or applied to the skin for up to eight weeks. In some cases, it can cause a bad taste in the mouth, nausea, vomiting, stomach upset, constipation, low blood pressure, dizziness, high blood sugar, high calcium levels, and fatigue. Shark cartilage may increase calcium levels, so it should not be used by animals whose calcium levels are already too high.
Cat’s Claw Extract: May cause headache, dizziness, and vomiting. Cat's Claw may reduce platelet aggregation, thin the blood and may lower blood pressure. Use with caution if your pet’s blood pressure is considered low. Use caution if your pet has been diagnosed with leukemia as Cat’s Claw may potentiate medications used to treat leukemia. Cat’s claw might cause the immune system to become more active and potentiate symptoms of auto-immune diseases. If your cat/dog has one of these conditions, consult with your Vet provider prior to use.
